So Miss Californicator goes on Larry King Live, no doubt hoping for asspats and simpering like she got on Sean Hannity. But as CNN is slightly less interested in embarrassing displays of idolatry, Larry asks her about her lawsuit and settlement (she keeps the tits, the solo sex tape doesn't reach the public).
Then she gets a caller from a viewer who introduces himself as a gay man, and she takes off her mike. Because obviously Carrie Prejean doesn't hate gays, as long as they don't talk to her and don't call her out on her bullshit when she--no offense--casually uses her personal religious beliefs as an excuse to persecute them. And she threatens to storm off the show, because King asked her a basic question about her spectacular failure of a dumbfuck lawsuit and then tried to get her to talk to a gay man, but then she just sits there, because she's a stupid bimbo and a media whore and she can't walk away from any form of attention. As much as she tries to play up her victimhood, Perez Hilton calling her a dumb bitch was really the best thing that ever happened to her.
Gotta love this quote from her new book, by the way:
In the book, Prejean talks about her Christian beliefs and condemns the ubiquity of pornography. Young women should resist the pressures of popular culture, of sex, she said, writing, “Our bodies are temples of the Lord. We should earn respect and admiration for our hearts, not for showing skin to look sexy.”
Oh, Carrie, you're about as good a spokesperson for not objectifying women as Bristol Palin is for abstinence-only sex education. |

Gay activists discuss the National Equality March (today!) and Obama's speech to the Human Rights Campaign's annual fundraising dinner last night.
( the rest behind the cut )
In any case, everyone keeps discussing whether or not this will have an impact on Congress and on Barack Obama. Obama's speech seems to indicate that it didn't, and Barney Frank called it "useless" in terms of moving Congress. Most congressmembers aren't even in town for the long weekend. But whether or not Congress even cares this is going on, the most important message, I hope, will be received by gay youth--somewhere like Missouri or Texas or Utah, there are kids who've been told by their families and churches that they're sick, wrong, and unworthy of love. And if the marchers in Washington DC, in their drag or leather gear or priests' robes or jeans and T-shirts, can give them hope and strength enough to endure and survive, then it will have been a success.
ETA: Go watch it on C-SPAN, it's amazing.
Edited again: I LOVE LADY GAGA! |

This is the first ad put out by the campaign to repeal the "everything but marriage" domestic partnership law in Washington state. Except, um, domestic partnership is not marriage, and this is a law that has very serious consequences for senior citizens as well, not just gay couples.
And did I mention, WHAT THE FUCK?
Second, a Christianist painter has created an interactive painting which depicts Jesus as the author of the Constitution. You can hover your mouse over the dozens of awed peasants surrounding Jesus and read the descriptions he wrote for them. For example, if you hover over the Asian immigrant, he has "a look of shock when he realizes where the source of America's greatness comes from as he sees Christ holding the Constitution." Bizarrely, the next sentence is, "We live in a country where we are free to worship as we please." Wait, what?
Within a few hours of that gem getting passed around on liberal and wingnut blogs alike, somebody made a parody version. I like it much better. :D |

A federal court rejected a lawsuit filed by a Florida woman who, along with her children, was barred from entering the hospital room where her partner was dying. Because the woman, Janice Langbehn, was a woman, and so was her partner, Lisa Pond. From Lambda Legal, which offered legal help to Ms. Langbehn:
"While on a family cruise leaving from Miami, Lisa Pond, a healthy 39 year-old, suddenly collapsed. She was rushed to Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital with her partner Janice and three children following close behind. There, the hospital refused to accept information from Janice about her partner's medical history. Janice was informed that she was in an antigay city and state, and she could expect to receive no information or acknowledgment as Lisa's partner or family.
A doctor finally spoke with Janice telling her that there was no chance of recovery. Other than one five minute visit that was arranged by a Catholic priest at Janice's request to perform last rites, and despite the doctor's acknowledgement that no medical reason existed to prevent visitation, neither Janice - who provided the hospital with a medical Power of Attorney document - nor their children were allowed to see Lisa until nearly eight hours after their arrival. Soon after Lisa's death, Janice tried to get her death certificate in order to get life insurance and Social Security benefits for their children. She was denied both by the State of Florida and the Dade County Medical Examiner."
This is why we need to legalize same-sex marriage. Because as long as the government has no obligation to acknowledge our families as legally existing, gay couples can be denied the right to see their dying partners in the hospital. They can be thrown out of shared apartments, and lose custody of children, if one of them dies. They can be torn apart if one of them is an immigrant. They can be forced to testify against each other in court. They are denied over one thousand rights at the state level and another thousand or so more at the federal level. It doesn't matter if they've been together for ten or thirty or sixty years. To the government, their relationships and their families do not exist.
It probably cost that couple thousands of dollars in legal fees to get powers of attorney for their children and each other that offer something approaching the same kind of legal protection that a simple marriage license does. Except it didn't actually protect them, did it. A California marriage license costs between 45 and 80 dollars. A Maine marriage license only costs $20. |

Bible-beater, rabid Christianist, and delusional nutcase Kirk Cameron, along with his friend Ray Comfort (the banana guy) has a plan to distribute 50,000 copies of The Origin of Species among the top 50 universities in the country, in an attempt to keep evil atheist professors from corrupting our minds with evidence-based science.
But wait, isn't The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin? Describing his theory of evolution? Oh, but Cameron and Comfort are passing out a corrected version. Yup, the book is public domain, so they're inserting their own 50-page introduction that, among other things, attempts to tie Darwin to Hitler, claims evolutionary biology justifies misogyny, slavery, and racism, and points to the wondrous structure of DNA as proof that God must exist.
This fine young woman puts it much better than I ever could:
I am so gonna look for these whack jobs (on NOVEMBER 19!) on campus and take as many copies as I can. I'll just pull out the first fifty pages and have a free copy of the Origin of Species! I'll have to grab one for my parents and another for my Bio 1B GSI. |

Article and a couple great pictures of the University of California walkout.
I forgot to bring my camera, but I did my best with my cell phone. I could only make it to the rally, but it was pretty incredible--there must have been between 5,000 and 10,000 students, faculty, and staff, all cheering and marching for public, affordable, accessible education. It was the biggest UC campus protest in a generation, and honestly, it was something I thought we had become too apathetic and complacent to do. I thought we'd lost what we had during the Free Speech Movement forty years ago. Today didn't come close to approaching that, but I'm still proud to see that we're aware and responsible enough to care about the entire UC community, and brave enough to stand up and demonstrate. |
